As programmers were finding developing applications over the Flash platform challenging, Adobe™ released Flex to help create rich and animated web applications. These could be deployed across various platforms. The 2 main components of Flex are MXML – an XML language used to create the layout of applications; and ActionScript – the scripting language on which the Flash platform is built. Adobe™ made the Flex SDK as open source so that developers could contribute and add more components to the already extensive component library that is available with the Flex SDK. This would help in creating visually stunning applications that could be viewed on multiple browsers with the help of the Flash platform.
